Conan O’Brien breaks silence on Rob Reiner’s death
The death of director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer, rocked the film world when they were discovered dead on December 14th at their family home in Brentwood, California.
Their son, Nick, aged 32, was taken into custody six hours after their bodies were found and has since been charged with fatally stabbing both of his parents.
In the aftermath, it was also revealed by CNN that the Reiners, including Nick, had engaged in an argument at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party on the evening of December 13th and left the gathering shortly afterwards. O’Brien had been a close family friend for many years.
In an interview with The New Yorker, the talk show host has since broken his silence on the turmoil of the case. “I mean, there’s no other word for it. It’s just very – it’s so awful. It’s just so awful,” he said.
O’Brien expressed that they were ”just such lovely people” and revealed how deeply traumatic he found the whole ordeal. ”I think I was in shock for quite a while afterward,” he said of his silence in the aftermath.
He added that their deaths also feel like a wider loss for America, explaining, “I think about how Rob felt about things that are happening in the country, how involved he was, how much he put himself out there – and to have that voice go quiet in an instant is still hard for me to comprehend.”
O’Brien, who is readying to host the Oscars this year, also reflected on the recent passing of Catherine O’Hara, which he described as ”incomprehensible”.
He added, ”And that’s someone who was perfection. And we’ve all had that feeling where someone’s being eulogized and we’re thinking, they were good, but this person’s kind of laying it on thick. Catherine is just – who’s a funnier performer than Catherine O’Hara?”
The 98th annual Oscars is scheduled to take place on March 15th, 2026.
