Coldplay to donate part of proceeds from new UK tour to Music Venue Trust
Coldplay have announced a string of live dates, including six shows at London’s Wembley Stadium and two at Hull’s Craven Park Stadium. As a way to give back to the small and independent venues they started out in, the band’s tour will see a percentage of their proceeds handed to the Music Venue Trust.
On September 15th, a poster was spotted in the window of Dublin Castle, a pub and venue in Camden which is where the band played their first-ever gig in February, 1998. It revealed not only that the group were announcing more dates, but that they would be donating 10 per cent of their proceeds to Music Venue Trust to support independent and grassroots venues, which were vital on their journey.
Additionally, money will also be given to the Music Venue Trust by the concerts’ promoters (SJM Concerts, Metropolis Music and Live Nation), the band’s booking agent (WME), the venues and the official ticket agents (Ticketmaster, See Tickets and AXS).
The CEO of Music Venue Trust, Mark Davyd, says of the gesture: “Coldplay are the perfect example of a UK band who came through the grassroots circuit on their way to worldwide stadium-filling success.”
Furthermore, Davyd also praised their willingness to recognise the other people who supported their journey, “It’s fantastic to see them celebrating their own pathway to Wembley by giving back to the grassroots music venues that supported them and recognising the artists and promoters that are struggling more than ever to build their own careers.”
At a time where the pricing of concerts regularly finds itself in the news, especially after the issues with Oasis’ dynamic pricing made their shows inaccessible to many, this scene from Coldplay is a positive step. With a boost from the proceeds of the tour, Music Venue Trust will be able to continue to protect and support small venues that are vital to the UK’s ability to create the stadium fillers of the future.
As well as supporting the music scene from the grassroots level, Coldplay are also helping music fans who would previously have been priced out of the show. As with the other dates on the Music Of The Spheres world tour, they will be releasing a batch of what they call ‘Infinity Tickets’. Priced at only £20, these are designed to make entry to the shows more accessible to fans who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford it.
When pairing all of this with the band’s ongoing commitment to putting on a sustainable show and cutting omissions of their tours, Coldplay’s latest shows are on track to set a new standard of charitable giving that all stadium acts should be aspiring to achieve.
