Coachella headliner Karol G claims her “team would kill” her for saying ‘ICE Out’
Karol G, who is set to headline Coachella this weekend, has revealed she has been warned against criticising ICE by her team.
The Colombian star will become the first Latina headliner in the history of the festival, and now, ahead of the huge show, has waded into the conversation surrounding ICE in the United States.
In a cover feature with Playboy, she explained, “People will say, ‘It’s better you don’t’,” in regards to criticising the actions of ICE.
The singer, real name Carolina Giraldo Navarro, explained that this stance from those around her is due to potential consequences, adding, “Why? Because if you say the thing, maybe the next day you’ll get a call: ‘Hey, we are taking your visa away.’ You become bait, because some people want to show their power.”
However, Navarro insists she will make a political statement at some stage, sharing, “I don’t want to just say ‘ICE Out‘ and have nothing come from it… I’m probably going to go a little harder than that. I just want to represent my community.”
She continued, “But what I’m telling you is that, as a human being, I want that to mean more. I’m not saying that I’m not going to do it; what I’m saying is that I would do it and will do it with my soul. But I want to sit down and understand, in my head: Here’s what that mean.”
While she conceded her “team would kill” her for saying ‘ICE Out’, Navarro is adamant that she’s “willing to say it”, before adding, “If I’m being honest with you, it’s something that crosses the line of what I have to do to protect myself. But at the end of the day, what is my role if I’m in this position?”
Karol G is set to headline both Sunday evenings of Coachella on April 12th and 19th, respectively. She is joined at the top of the bill by Sabrina Carpenter and Justin Bieber.
Across the weekend, David Byrne, Iggy Pop, Geese, The Strokes, Addison Rae, Wet Leg, Anyma, Laufey, Blood Orange, The XX, Teddy Swims, Young Thug and Little Simz will also be appearing.
Additionally, it was confirmed earlier this week that Jack White will perform a last-minute set during the first weekend of the Californian festival.
