Coachella 2025: Weezer play set without acknowledging arrest of bassist Scott Shriner’s wife
Weezer took to the stage to play their set at Coachella without acknowledging the arrest of bassist Scott Shriner’s wife, Jillian Lauren, last week.
Lauren was arrested on April 7th at her home in Los Angeles for attempted murder after an altercation with police in which she was shot in the shoulder.
Nevertheless, Weezer still took to the Mojave Stage at Coachella on April 12th to play their set. They were a last-minute addition to the line-up after a number of other acts were forced to pull out for various reasons.
Shriner, who joined the band in 2001, didn’t acknowledge the situation either while on stage or before their performance. He only released a brief statement to confirm he would still take to the stage and to thank the public for their support before simply adding, “She’s alright,” with regard to his wife’s well-being.
In light of the controversy, Weezer played a strait-laced 45-minute set without mention of the incident, focusing on hammering out standard hits such as ‘My Name is Jonas’, ‘Hash Pipe’, ‘Undone – The Sweater Song’, and ‘Island in the Sun’.
The band also performed a blazing cover of Metallica’s 1991 stratospheric hit ‘Mr Sandman’, which they previously covered for the former’s tribute album, The Metallica Blacklist, in 2021.
Weezer are set to tour the UK and Europe later this summer in celebration of the 30th anniversary of their debut record, The Blue Album, but it is unknown how the course of Lauren’s potential criminal case may affect these plans.
Coachella is set to continue for its second weekend from April 18th to 20th, featuring headlining performances from Lady Gaga, Post Malone, Green Day, and Travis Scott.
