Coachella 2024: Festival adds huge band to line-up

Coachella, the most iconic festival in North America, returns on April 12th. Ahead of the event, organisers have unveiled a surprise treat, in the form of indie giants Vampire Weekend. The band will join previously confirmed acts such as Blur, Tyler, The Creator, Doja Cat and No Doubt.

When people go to Coachella, they expect more than just a music festival; they demand an immersive experience filled with art, fashion, and performances that won’t be available anywhere else. In order to contribute towards this, the festival typically provides last-minute additions to keep people guessing and continuing to surprise fans throughout the weekend. Staying true to that trend, Vampire Weekend are set to play at the first weekend of the 2024 event.

Vampire Weekend will be performing on Saturday, April 13th, on the Outdoor Theatre stage, delivering a 45-minute set from 5:00pm to 5:45pm. It is yet to be confirmed whether they will be doing a similar performance during the second weekend of the festival.

This won’t be Vampire Weekend’s first time performing at the iconic event, as they previously took to the stage in 2008, 2010 and 2013. However, it marks their first Coachella appearance in over a decade, and their first festival since the release of their new album, Only God Was Above Us. Their latest critically acclaimed album was released last week and has already been described by many as some of their best work.

In a four-and-a-half star review, Far Out noted that the band, despite having an indie sound at heart, have never been afraid to provide experimental sounds. The new album is no different in this sense, as Vampire Weekend experimented with classical sounds and time signatures to achieve a sound they had previously not explored.

The review stated: “Each song has windchime-like trickling guitar and keys at its heart, with even the most minimalistic tracks building like symphonies. It’s this style of music as it’s never been done before. Unpredictable in its structure and execution but completely charming throughout.”

Coachella attendees will be able to see the band’s new material amongst a stellar lineup of artists from the worlds of pop, rock and hip-hop. Headlining the festival are Lana Del Rey, Tyler, The Creator and Doja Cat. Meanwhile, others on the line-up include Blur, Justice, Grimes, Bleachers and Deftones.
