Coachella 2024 day two round-up: Rap, ska and Paris Hilton

Day two in the desert brought with it cooler weather, nostalgia and one of the most random surprise guests you’ve ever seen. As temperatures drop to just below slightly scorching, Coachella brings another day of exciting music that shows, despite tickets not selling out, organisers and performers are keen to put on the biggest display of their lives at the event.

Saturday brings the most exciting mix of music as bands with sounds stretching from rock and indie to funk are set to perform. As ever with large scale line-ups these days, the crowd are left with the difficult decision of who they should dedicate their time to.

Blur had a set on the mainstage that clashed with Jon Batiste, who was still on top form despite performing shortly before during Lana Del Rey’s headline set. Other exciting artists performing included Vampire Weekend (who were only recently added to the line-up), Jungle delivered a stellar mix of disco and funk to the California sun and, of course, No Doubt reunited after nine years.

Eyes were all fixated on the main stage for the headline performance from Tyler, The Creator, though. The rapper has gone from strength to strength in recent years. Thanks to Flower Boy, IGOR, and Call Me If You Get Lost, he has cemented himself as one of the most genre-defying artists in hip-hop. He also has a famous live show packed with energy, so music lovers in attendance were all excited to see what his set would bring.

Vampire Weekend shock with surprise guest

Following the recent release of their new albumOnly God Was Above Us, all eyes are currently on Vampire Weekend. They’re proving themselves to be some of the most innovative minds in indie music with their gorgeous blend of classical music and modern rock and pop. So, when they were added to the Coachella lineup a week ago, fans couldn’t contain their excitement.

During the set, they ploughed through songs, new and old, making the most of the short set they were given, but the most shocking moment of their performance came with their outro. The band rattled through a medley of cowboy-themed classics before welcoming Paris Hilton to the stage, who played a game of cornhole with the band. “I haven’t done this since the simple life,” she said.

The Last Dinner Party have officially gone global

One of the most talked about bands at the moment, The Last Dinner Party, has proven they have officially gone global as the Coachella crowd waited in anticipation for the barock sounds that they offer so eloquently. The band took to the The Gobi Tent and delivered an arty throwback.

Their mastery over their instruments is steadily setting them out as great songwriters and a must-see live band, which was well on display at Coachella. The American crowd was in awe of the band as hits such as ‘Sinner’, ‘Second Best’, and ‘Nothing Matters’ were perfectly played.

No Doubt and Olivia Rodrigo deliver ska to the highest calibre

Putting an end to a nine-year hiatus, No Doubt took to Coachella on Saturday night. A punk-looking Gwen Stefani hit the stage and delivered a set draped in nostalgia but packed with a 2024-like energy. In running through hits like ‘Just a Girl’, ‘Ex-Girlfriend’, and ‘Don’t Speak’, the group were the last act on stage before the headliner.

Joining the band on stage was Olivia Rodrigo, who took a day off from her Guts world tour to join them on stage to perform a rendition of their 2000 ska-pop anthem ‘Bathwater’. Rodrigo has previously referenced the band as a significant influence, so performing on stage with them was undoubtedly a full-circle moment.

A “tired” Tyler, The Creator goes off like a rocket

Shortly into the set, Tyler, The Creator, jokingly complained about how tired he was given how late his headline slot started; however, any element of fatigue wasn’t present as the rapper delivered one of the most upbeat, heartfelt and genuine performances of the weekend. With the crowd in fine voice, Tyler played a variety of songs from his discography and had the crowd in the palm of his hand throughout.

Joining him on stage were a plethora of stars, including Charlie Wilson, Kali Uchis and Donald Glover. One of the highlights, however, was when A$AP Rocky came on and performed the tracks ‘Potato Salad’ and ‘Who Dat Boy’. Tyler has proven tonight he is a headlining force to be reckoned with as he shot off the stage to the sound of ‘New Magic Wand’, leaving a crowd of thousands desperate for more.
