Cillian Murphy plays down importance of his Oscars win: “It’s so divorced from reality”
Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy has said that his Oscars win in 2024 is “divorced from reality”.
The Irish actor won the ‘Best Actor’ award, which last week was given to Michael B Jordan for Sinners, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles for his performance in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
However, Murphy, two years on from the historic victory, has reflected on the accomplishment and suggested that it bears little weight in the real world outside of the Hollywood bubble.
He told the Radio Times in a new interview, “The whole awards campaign is like an out-of-body experience.”
Murphy continued, “It’s not real. It’s very hallucinogenic. I’m very grateful for it but it’s so divorced from reality.”
Even two years on from the night that saw his name etched into the history books forever, Murphy still sees that night “like something that didn’t happen in real time, some magical kind of dream”.
Following his Oscars win, Murphy hasn’t allowed the path that he’s followed throughout his career to be altered. Instead, continuing to focus on projects, no matter the size or budget, that appeal to him.
His new film, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, which lands on Netflix on March 20th, sees him back as Tommy Shelby, a character that he’s been playing on-screen for the past 13 years.
Last year, during an interview with Variety, Murphy explained how his philosophy remains unchanged despite Oppenheimer catapulting him to the world stage, insisting, “The unprecedented success of Oppenheimer was this magical, extraordinary thing that happened, and I’m so grateful for it and so proud of it. But the types of films that I want to make and the types of stories that I want to tell haven’t been changed by that.”
Next up for Murphy is a role in Damian Chazelle’s upcoming movie, which is yet to receive a title, alongside Daniel Craig and Michelle Williams. The project recently began shooting in Greece.
