Cigarettes After Sex announce new album ‘X’s’ and share single ‘Tejano Blue’

Cigarettes After Sex are to release their new album, X’s, on July 12th through Partisan Records.

To preview the forthcoming album, Cigarettes After Sex have shared the new single ‘Tejano Blue’, providing the first taste of things to come from the upcoming release. X’s marks the first full-length project from the Greg Gonzalez-led group since their second LP, Cry, shared in 2019.

Gonzalez says of ‘Tejano Blue’: “I grew up in El Paso & Tejano music is huge there. You could go to a lot of the bars in the city and hear artists like Selena, Los Ángeles Azules & La Mafia playing over the speakers. It was in the atmosphere around me back then, but I always rejected it and gravitated towards anything else I was attracted to really.”

The singer continues: “Years later when I was living in New York City I finally started listening to Selena’s ‘Como La Flor’ at the same time that I was also listening to a lot of Cocteau Twins. I had the idea then to try to combine both of their sounds somehow, which felt a bit strange, but also felt like it was coming from a genuine place of rediscovering & finally connecting with the music that I heard around me in my youth.”

Xs finds Gonzalez dealing with the loss of love. The beginnings of the album were born two years ago on Valentine’s Day, when he travelled to his hometown, El Paso, for a show. During the journey, he listened to ‘By Your Side’ by Sade on repeat to aid with his heartbreak, which sparked an idea in his mind: “I thought, how do I make a record that feels like that?”

Elaborating on Xs, Gonzalez said: “The record feels brutal, honestly,” admits Gonzalez. “I could sit and talk about this loss to someone, but that wouldn’t scratch the surface. I have to really write about it, sing about it, have the music, and then I can start to analyse and learn from it. Or just relive it—in a good way. I don’t have that Eternal Sunshine-thing of wanting to forget.”

Additionally, Cigarettes After Sex are set to hit the road on a worldwide tour. Notable dates include London’s O2 Arena on November 12th and New York’s Madison Square Garden on September 6th.
