Chvrches singer Lauren Mayberry shares new solo single, ‘Change Shapes’

Chvrches vocalist Lauren Mayberry has shared her new solo single ‘Change Shapes’. The new track follows from the string of singles released late last year.

Following from ‘Are You Awake?’ and ‘Shame’, the new track finds Mayberry singing of exhaustion and performative hypocrisy over synth-pop soundscapes. “I’m a doll inside a box with a ball and a chain,” she declares, “I bend over backwards, tiptoe along every wire.”

In a statement about the track, the vocalist shared, “How do I keep people happy enough that they’ll let me do the creative work that I want to? I feel quite fake and hypocritical sometimes because so much of the narrative around the band is ‘feminist’, but my experience inside of it hasn’t been a lot of the time.”

“I feel like I did all this work to make things function,” she continued, “but when you DO adapt yourself in that way, it’s seen as manipulative, in order to get what you want.”

Mayberry has fronted synth-pop outfit Chvrches since they began in 2011, before announcing her solo endeavours last year. Following the announcement, she spent autumn of 2023 touring North America and Europe.

It’s been three years since the last full length offering from Chvrches, 2021’s Screen Violence, which Far Out considered to be a return to form for the band. In a review of the album, Far Out said, “Screen Violence isn’t a significant sonic step forward for Chvrches, but rather a righting of the ship to put them back on course as the world’s best synth-pop band once again.”

‘Change Shapes’, the latest single from Lauren Mayberry, is out now. Listen below.
