Christopher Nolan becomes new President of Directors Guild of America

Christopher Nolan has become the new President of the Directors Guild of America.

The Oppenheimer filmmaker takes over from Lesli Linka Glatter, who served two terms after she was elected in 2021. Glatter is best known for her work on the AMC drama series Mad Men and the Showtime series Homeland, as well as the movies Now and Then and State of Emergency.

Nolan has addressed the honour in a statement, which begins, “To be elected President of the Directors Guild of America is one of the greatest honors of my career.”

He continued, “Our industry is experiencing tremendous change, and I thank the Guild’s membership for entrusting me with this responsibility. I also want to thank President Glatter for her leadership over the past four years. I look forward to collaborating with her and the newly elected Board to achieve important creative and economic protections for our members.”

Nolan ran for top office unopposed and will take over the 19,500-member union of directors, associate and assistant directors, unit production managers, and stage managers. He is currently the chair of the union’s theatrical creative rights committee and its artificial intelligence committee.

The union is currently preparing for upcoming negotiations with major studios; Glatter led the union successfully through the 2023 actors and writers strikes. The union has recently focused on expanding foreign streaming residuals.

This isn’t Nolan’s only huge undertaking in the near future. His next big-screen project is The Odyssey set for release in July 2026. The all-star cast includes Tom Holland, Matt Damon, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Mia Goth, John Leguizamo, Benny Safdie and Elliot Page.

The movie is predicted to be such a huge success that the tickets for IMAX screenings went on sale exactly one year before the movie opens in cinemas.
