Chris Rock to direct English-language version of ‘Another Round’

Following the success of Thomas Vinterberg’s Danish-language Another Round, Chris Rock will be remaking an American version of the film.

Vinterberg’s 2020 movie, starring Mads Mikkelsen and Thomas Bo Larsen, won ‘Best International Feature Film’ at the Academy Awards. It was highly lauded for its use of dark humour to explore several teachers’ experimentations with alcohol consumption.

Rock, best known for his stand-up comedy and roles as an actor, directed his first movie, Head of State, in 2003. A few years later, he made the comedy I Think I Love My Wife, inspired by Éric Rohmer’s French classic 1972 film Love in the Afternoon, which like his directorial debut, received a lukewarm reception.

However, he helmed Top Five in 2014, a comedy starring himself, Gabrielle Union, Rosario Dawson, Kevin Hart and Whoopi Goldberg. It was critically acclaimed, helping to cement Rock’s status as a talented filmmaker.

With his next project, little is known about cast members and production schedule, but his English-language remake has been drafted by Stuart Bloomberg, with a new screenwriter being employed to flesh it out into a full script.

The movie will be produced by several companies, including Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way. This isn’t the only project Rock has in the pipeline – he will also be directing King: A Life, executively produced by Steven Spielberg, which will focus on the life of Martin Luther King Jr.

In a four-star review of Another Round, Far Out wrote: “Dealing with themes of grief, loss, friendship, joy, anxiety and other elements in the endless spectrum of the human condition, Another Round is an exploration of the subject of mental health but it is also a celebration.”

The review concludes: “Following the arguments of the philosopher it cites, the film suggests that the key to happiness might lie somewhere in between Apollonian control and Dionysian chaos.”
