Charli XCX’s ‘The Moment’ becomes fastest-selling A24 title in history
The Moment, the new film from singer Charli XCX, has already become the fastest-selling title by A24 in history, despite receiving mixed reviews after its premiere.
A press release from the production company claims that the movie has become the fastest-selling title in its history, with more than 50 screenings having already sold out prior to its release in the US on January 30th.
The key demographic fuelling this surge in advanced ticket sales are people under the age of 35, who are also the singer’s main fanbase off the back of the viral success of her 2024 album Brat.
This comes despite the fact that The Moment has received a decidedly lukewarm response from critics after its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. Very little has been given away about the plot of the film prior to its release, but it has been billed as a mockumentary where Charli XCX, playing herself, is seen fighting against industry figures to perform her first headline tour.
There are obvious parallels between this and the singer’s own rise from an average pop star to the height of the mainstream, but she has insisted that she is keen to let go of the Brat era.
“There was this sort of persona that people really associated me with and then there were a lot of expectations put on me as a person, as an artist, of who I was then supposed to be. And I didn’t fit into that sort of narrative,” she told the Associated Press (via ABC) after the film’s premiere at Sundance.
“I had got to this place where I was finally feeling so understood. Then I was, like, not understood again,” the singer added, speaking of the reasons why she decided to team up with director Aidan Zamiri to create The Moment.
She explained previously how the film was borne from the fact that she turned down another movie pitch based on the essence of Brat, and instead pivoted towards the satirical mockumentary style.
Charli said this change in direction “Felt like a way into talking about pop culture, fame and the loss of art the second you put something out. This felt like a rich ground to breed ideas.”
Starring alongside her in the film is Alexander Skarsgård, Rachel Sennott, Hailey Benton Gates, Jamie Demetriou, Kate Berlant, and Rosanna Arquette, as well as a cameo from Kylie Jenner.
