Charli XCX shares dissonant new single, ‘Wall of Sound’

Charli XCX has shared a haunting new single, ‘Wall of Sound’, from her forthcoming album for Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights.

On the track, she delves into the intense yearning at the heart of the Wuthering Heights tale, singing, “‘Cause every time I try talking myself backwards / Away from my desires / Something inside me stops me.”

The upcoming album is slated for a February 13th release, in line with the movie, which will hit cinemas on Valentine’s Day.

Wuthering Heights stars Margot Robbie stars as the lead character of Catherine Earnshaw, opposite Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff, in the adaptation of Emily Brontë’s 1847 novel of the same name.

When the singer broke the news of the unprecedented collaboration, she shared, “I got a call from Emerald Fennell last Christmas asking whether I would consider working on a song for her adaptation of Wuthering Heights. I read the script and immediately felt inspired, so Finn Keane and I began working on not just one but many songs that we felt connected to the world she was creating.”

The ‘Apple’ singer has released two other songs from the album. On ‘House’, Charli XCX collaborated with Velvet Underground legend John Cale, who lends his deep cadence in the form of spoken-word poetry.

She also released ‘Chains of Love’, which received a triumphant four-and-a-half star review from Far Out: “It’s a perfect meeting in the middle. This is still a Charli XCX song, complete with the familiar vocal effect and huge electronic details, but in the vastness of it and classical elements, it becomes rich and cinematic, yet all in her own way.”

Wuthering Heights isn’t Charli XCX’s only cinematic endeavour. The musician is also set to star in The Moment, a mockumentary which sees her grapple with the highs and lows of her huge 2024 album, Brat.

The film, which also stars Rachel Sennott and Kylie Jenner, will enjoy its first screening at the Sundance Festival in Utah later this year. Her other upcoming projects include a dark comedy titled The Gallerist and an erotic thriller, I Want Your Sex, from director Gregg Araki.
