Chappell Roan forced to hire security following stalker incident
The past year has seen pop singer Chappell Roan rise to an unprecedented level of stardom in a short space of time. As a result, she has garnered a fanbase that includes Lady Gaga, Adele, Lorde, and Miley Cyrus. While she welcomes her success, it hasn’t come without its pitfalls, as Roan has had to set clear boundaries between herself and her fans.
Roan states that she continues to get called out in the street which has made her feel unsafe, and as a result, she has had to get security. This goes against the message that she conveyed in a TikTok post in August, where she begged fans not to harass her in the street as she wanted to live a normal life.
“They need to see me as a random bitch on the street,” she said in an interview with Rolling Stone, “You can’t yell at a random bitch who’s on the sidewalk that you don’t know. It’s considered catcalling or harassment.”
Roan continued the same sentiment she had established in her recent social posts on the subject but also provided some more detail on the situation. The singer told the publication that she currently has an active stalker who turned up at her parents’ house and followed her to her hotel room in New York. “So now I have to have security,” she said, “It’s so lame.”
Other instances where members of the public have crossed the line with Roan include an instance when a fan kissed her without her consent, suffering harassment at the hands of a man at an airport over an autograph and having her Dad’s number leaked online. “I got home and dropped to my knees,” she said, “I have a hard time crying now because of my meds, but I sobbed and was screaming.”
Roan’s debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, has been in the top five on the US chart for many weeks now, but her rise to fame has been sudden as she herself explained, “My career is just kind of going really fast and it’s really hard to keep up.”
However, in the midst of the chaos, Roan says she has had multiple pop stars reach out and offer her support. These include Charli XCX, Troye Sivan, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Julien Baker, Miley Cyrus, Mitski, and Hayley Williams.
Roan also confirmed that she has been talking a lot with Sabrina Carpenter, who is having a similar rise to fame as her most recent singles, ‘Please Please Please’ and ‘Espresso’. “We’re both going through something so fucking hard,” she said, “She just feels like everything is flying, and she’s just barely hanging on… It was just good to know someone else feels that way.”
