Chaka Khan to release collection of unheard Prince collaborations
Chaka Khan has revealed that she’s set to release a series of songs she made with Prince before his death.
In 1984, Khan had a huge hit with her cover of Prince’s track, ‘I Feel For You’, which gave her career a renewed lease of life. In the late 1990s, Khan signed to Prince’s NPG Records and the pair also set out on a co-headline tour together.
Now, in a new interview with The Guardian, Khan reflected on performing with Prince and their special relationship, recalling, It was like working with myself, more than anyone else I’ve worked with. Sia’s bringing up a close third, behind Prince and Miles Davis. Quincy Jones, too: he oozed inspiration and shared it. Prince just grabbed ideas out of the air and left you wondering: ‘Where did you get that?'”
She then revealed that they recorded much material together, which has never been released due to the “red tape” that Khan has now successfully navigated.
The singer explained: “He was a really deep and beautiful thinker. We worked on a lot of songs, and they’re all going to be on a CD I’m soon to release – there’s a lot of red tape that’s been in the way, but we’ve cleared it. It’s him and me and Larry Graham, together.”
In the same article, Khan also compared Prince to Miles Davis, stating, “He and Prince were very similar – big thinkers. Miles was always looking to grow. Prince was, too. The three of us collaborated on Sticky Wicked, on my CK album in 1988, and it was a beautiful combination.”
This summer, Khan is set to embark upon an arena tour across North America followed by a short trip to Europe. She will headline Hampton Court Palace Festival on June 18th, marking her only UK date of 2025.
