Cast revealed for new Jesse Eisenberg A24 musical comedy movie

The cast for a new movie directed by Jesse Eisenberg has been revealed, as a follow-up to his Oscar-winning film A Real Pain.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, production house A24 is helming the as-yet-untitled project and has already begun shooting. Halle Bailey, Havana Rose Liu, and Bernadette Peters are joining the cast.

Other actors previously reported as being attached to the film are Julianne Moore, Paul Giamatti, Bonnie Milligan, Colton Ryan, Lilli Cooper, and Maulik Pancholy.

Full details for the musical comedy are yet to be revealed, but A24 said that its synopsis centres on “a shy woman who is unexpectedly cast in a community theatre musical production, going to extremes as she loses herself in the role.”

Eisenberg has composed all the music and lyrics for the film’s score, working with musical supervisor Steven Gizicki and producer Bill Sherman in the process.

He is also returning to the acclaimed team that produced his critical hit comedy A Real Pain, with A24 partners Fruit Tree bringing Emma Stone, as well as Dave McCary, Ali Herting, and Topic Studios back on board as executive producers.

This is not the first time Eisenberg has worked with A24 either, having previously produced his drama When You Finish Saving the World under the studio.

The new film will mark Eisenberg’s first return to the director’s chair since last year’s A Real Pain, in which he and Kieran Culkin star as misfit cousins who go on a trip across Poland to honour their late grandmother and Jewish heritage.

Co-star Culkin won the award for ‘Best Actor in a Supporting Role’ at the 2025 Oscars for his performance in the film.
