Caroline Polachek and Weyes Blood team up on new version of ‘Butterfly Net’

Caroline Polachek + Weyes Blood - 'Butterfly Net'
3.5

A year on from the release of Desire, I Want To Turn Into You, Caroline Polachek has announced a deluxe edition to be released on Valentine’s Day. To mark the news, she’s teamed up with Weyes Blood for a wistful new take on ‘Butterfly Net’.

The track was originally featured on the 2023 record. Always standing as a beautiful ballad, offering a slower and more emotive side to the album, ‘Butterfly Net’ allowed Polachek’s lyricism and vocals to shine without too much distraction.

Now with the addition of Weyes Blood, the track has been elevated to a masterpiece. Natalie Laura Mering, better known as her moniker, is one of the most unique vocalists of modern times alongside Polachek. Her deep, velvety sound perfectly contrasts the high-ranging vocal acrobatics Polachek is known for.

As their voices meet and merge, ‘Butterfly Net’ is given a whole new life. With more depth and intrigue, the instrumental has also been revived as a more interesting beast.

As both artists exist within a baroque art-pop universe, their collaboration feels like a long-awaited act. Weyes Blood’s recent album, And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow, saw her take an internal tour of crisis response. Similar to Polachek, her albums come along with strong art direction and a clear purpose. The new record stood as a follow-up to the 2019 Titanic Rising, considering them two parts of an eventual trilogy,

Polachek treats her career with the same visionary streak. Desire, I Want To Turn Into You was a clear step up from 2019’s Pang. However, ‘Butterfly Net’ does hark back to the introspective and vocally led tracks like ‘Door’ or ‘Go As A Dream’.

On ‘Butterfly Net’, their contrasts sit as a beautiful ying and yang. Blood’s more earth-bound voice feels grounding, keeping the song tethered to it’s emotional core in a way that Polachek’s solo tracks sometimes lose. The changing voices seems to allow the listener to get deeper into the story of trying to lock love down and the way fate can capture you. Polachek’s usual yodeling vocals are used in a more considered way, weaving around Weyes Blood’s more nostalgic sound. Together, they make a stunning blend of the ethereal and the emotive.

Desire, I Want To Turn Into You: Everasking Edition will feature this new duet alongside Polachek’s recent single, ‘Dang’ and other new tracks that didn’t make the original record. While the tracklist hasn’t been revealed yet, we’re already excited for more.
