Cara Delevingne says Harvey Weinstein told her to hide her sexuality: “I really took it to heart”

Cara Delevingne has revealed that disgraced former movie mogul Harvey Weinstein warned her against coming out as gay.

Delevingne appeared in the 2017 film, Tulip Fever, which also featured Alicia Vikander and Jack O’Connell. It was the last movie released by The Weinstein Company amid the slew of sexual misconduct allegations against the company’s co-founder.

Now, she’s opened up about her encounters with Weinstein in the latest episode of The Louis Theroux Podcast, sharing with the documentary maker, “Harvey Weinstein called me up and said, ‘Are you gay?’ And I was like, ‘Um, what do you mean?’ And he was like, ‘You should never be in a relationship with a woman.'”

The phone call stemmed from Weinstein seeing “paparazzi photos of me with women,” according to Delevingne.

Divulging further details of their conversation, Delevingne shared that the disgraced former film producer was “just saying, ‘You’ll never make it in the industry if people think you’re gay.’ And I really believed him, and I really took that to heart.”

Reflecting on her sexuality with Theroux and first realising she was gay, Delevingne recalled, “Well, now I look back on it, it was super evident really young. I knew at, like, 11 years old. I had this one friend that I was like, ‘Oh, I think I care about her more than she likes me, and I don’t know how, but I do.’ It was obvious now, but then it really wasn’t, and I’m very proud of it now.”

Delevingne, who first came out as pansexual in 2020 before publicly announcing she was a lesbian earlier this year on-stage at a Rosalía concert in London, added, “I think when I started talking about it and being open about it, I felt like there was a lot to fight for still at that point in terms of shows about gay people and, you know, people to look up to for, for younger kids.”

Previously, in 2017, Delevingne alleged that Weinstein sexually harassed her and attempted to make her kiss another woman in a hotel, then tried to kiss her himself when she attempted to leave, per The Guardian.

Last week, it was confirmed that Weinstein will not face a new trial after a rape case ended in a mistrial in May.

He is currently serving a 16-year prison sentence after being convicted of rape in California during a 2022 trial, which he is appealing.

In 2025, Weinstein was found guilty of raping Miriam Haley in 2006, and could face up to 25 years in prison for the assault. He is currently awaiting sentence in Rikers Island.
