Cannes 2025: Robert Pattinson found playing a “normal guy” challenging in ‘Die, My Love’
Speaking at Cannes Festival on behalf of the new film Die, My Love, actor Robert Pattinson has opened up about playing his character in the sensual study on post-partum depression.
The film, and Lynne’s fifth feature, is an adaptation of the 2017 novel of the same name by Ariana Harwicz about a new mother who develops postpartum depression and enters psychosis. Pattinson stars opposite Jennifer Lawrence, who plays his wife experiencing a breakdown in the countryside.
Pattinson is acclaimed in the movie industry for playing curious, unusual leads. Most recently, he excelled in Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17, playing a moronish clone who must die and return for the sake of his employment. Speaking at Cannes, Pattinson detailed the new approach to characterisation this new project necessitated.
He began, “I guess it’s an interesting character because normally I’m attracted to characters who are sort of incredibly abrasive and quite obscure. I think Jackson was way more of a normal guy than I’ve played before.”
He continued: “He’s just a guy who was a musician in New York. He’s not a mental health professional. He’s not looking at TikTok reels about parenting. He’s just hoping the relationship will go back to what it was in its purest form, and not understanding why this is happening to them.”
He finished his rumination with a shrug, pointing to the “universal” nature of having to deal with the isolation of a loved one: “I guess it’s a fear that everyone has.”
Pattinson’s previous Twilight co-star also attended Cannes, where she showed her directorial debut, A Chronology of Water. The film, which details abuse and addiction in a non-linear fashion, received a four-minute standing ovation.
A release date for Die, My Love has not been officially finalised, though IMDb suggests it could be as soon as June 6th in Europe.
