Cannes 2024: Full lineup reveals movie premieres from Francis Ford Coppola and George Miller
The lineup for the forthcoming Cannes Film Festival has been announced, with this year’s iteration including some long-anticipated movies from iconic directors.
Top of the billing is Francis Ford Coppola’s return to filmmaking with his career-long passion project Megalopolis, the story of an architect wishing to rebuild New York City after a mass-scale disaster. Made entirely from the money earned from the director’s winery, the movie is being described as an extravagant indie epic starring the likes of Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito and Aubrey Plaza.
Speaking of long-awaited projects, Australian director George Miller will also be in attendance with the premiere of his Mad Max: Fury Road follow-up, Furiosa, nine years after the release of the original film. The prequel focuses on the title character, Furiosa, a young warrior trying to forge an existence for herself on the barren plains of post-apocalyptic Australia, with Anya Taylor-Joy playing the lead character.
Furiosa will be screened outside of the main competition movies, with Kevin Costner’s grand western epic Horizon: An American Saga joining it. Having been trying to make the movie since 1988, Costner recently said of the project: “ I believe in the idea and the story…At the end of the day, I’m a storyteller, and I went ahead and put my own money into it. I’m not a very good businessman, so, scratch your head, if you will. I don’t know why, but I have not let go of this one”.
Take a look at the full list of movies due to be screened at the Cannes Film Festival 2024 below.
