Geese singer Cameron Winter reveals why he is “self-conscious” about his song-writing

Geese frontman Cameron Winter has opened up about his songwriting process, admitting that he is often “self-conscious” about his ability.

The Brooklyn four-piece appeared on the Zane Lowe podcast on Apple Music to discuss Getting Killed, their third studio album released in September to huge critical acclaim.

During the discussion, Winter, who has also released a highly praised solo album titled Heavy Metal, admitted to often feeling “self-conscious” about his lyrical ability.

When Lowe asked how Winter deals with balancing the abstract with the “bigger stuff”, the personal with the political, when writing the new album, Winter admitted, “I feel like there’s nothing worse than going into a song, like ‘I have something to say with this song’.”

He continued, “Because then it’s just too much, like you’d end up writing a song that’s all about some super-specific issue – they don’t age very well, those songs. The clearer the message, sometimes, the less powerful it can come across.”

He added jokingly, “It doesn’t come across artistically. You should just make a tweet, or something.”

However, the singer-songwriter admitted, “Sometimes I do have something to say, unfortunately,” before admitting, “I get self-conscious about being too on the nose, and then if I’m not on the nose at all and it’s just like Goobledee-Girk, Lewis Caroll, horse-talk. Then I have to reverse engineer the message.”

Getting Killed was Far Out‘s ‘Album of the Week’, receiving an admirable four-and-a-half-star review. Far Out observed, “An insecurity that’s usually been protected by slacker-rock humour seems to have fallen away on Getting Killed and Winter fully embraces the different flecks of his vocal timbre, not hiding its idiosyncrasies but instead embracing them.”

The band is currently undertaking their North American tour, alongside Racing Mount Pleasant and Dove Ellis. Their next stops include cities like Houston, Atlanta, Asheville, and beyond.
