Bryan Cranston was almost fired from ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ for not being funny enough
Bryan Cranston has revealed Fox wanted to recast Hal in Malcolm in the Middle before taking on the show for a full series.
The beloved sitcom, that originally ran between 2000 and 2006, is set to return for four special episodes next month, which will see Cranston reunite with Frankie Muniz, Jane Kaczmarek, Christopher Masterson and Justin Berfield.
Erik Per Sullivan, who played Dewey, has not returned for Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, with the role being recast to Caleb Ellsworth-Clark.
“Yeah, we have four new episodes that’ll be on Hulu in April,” Cranston shared of the new series while on The Romesh Ranganathan Show, before adding, “We had such a great time, and after 20 years of not doing the show, we said goodbye 20 years ago, and now we say hello again with four new episodes.”
He also acknowledged that the boys are no longer boys, scarily revealing, “The boys are all around the same age that I was when we first started the show in 1999, when we shot the pilot in 1999. They’re grown, they’ve got kids of their own. It was so good to see them.”
Providing an insight into what to expect from the forthcoming episodes, Cranston said, “It was a good format too, because we’re talking about Hal and Lois are celebrating their 40th anniversary and it’s now time to get everybody together to celebrate.”
Without giving away major spoilers, Cranston told fans that “everything goes in a very Malcolm way”, which won’t come as a major surprise to those planning to tune in.
In a bombshell admission, Cranston then shared that he was almost dropped from the show before it began, explaining that Hal in Malcolm in the Middle was initially “not really very good and not very funny” in the pilot that led to the first series in 2000.
However, when Fox revealed their intention to recast the role, the show’s creator Linwood Boomer intervened to stop that from happening, sharing, “He absolutely refused to fire me.”
Boomer also took responsibility for the flaws of the character, promising to “flesh out” the role more for the first series.
Cranston dotingly added, “Every successful actor needs a champion in their lives. I’ve had several, and that’s how it happens. You need a dose of luck to have a successful career. Without luck, you will not have a successful career.“
Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair will premiere in the UK on April 10th on Disney+.
