Bruce Springsteen denies claims he’s a billionaire
Bruce Springsteen has refuted claims that he’s now a billionaire, stating that he’s far too wasteful with money for that to be true.
In July, Forbes “conservatively” estimated the legendary singer-songwriter’s current net worth to be $1.1billion. While he has sold over 140 million records worldwide since coming onto the scene in the 1970s, which has significantly contributed to Springsteen’s accrual of wealth, his highly lucrative touring schedule has also been pivotal.
Furthermore, in 2023 alone, it was reported that he sold over 1.6million tickets across the globe, generating a revenue of $380million. Since then, Springsteen has toured significantly throughout this year, and plots to do the same in 2025.
However, according to the report, it was the highly-lucrative deal Springsteen struck with Sony Music Publishing in 2021 to sell his back catalogue for $500million which pushed the musician into the billionaire club.
Despite Forbes making the valuation of Springsteen’s wealth, the musician has now rubbished their claims in a new interview. Speaking to The Telegraph, he shared: “I’m not a billionaire. I wish I was, but they got that real wrong. I’ve spent too much money on superfluous things.”
Although Springsteen did confess that he’s amassed a “good fortune”, he said “you put the work in” to achieve such riches. Additionally, the ‘Born In The USA’ singer believes it’s important to not dwell on his financial successes becuase “that’s usually where people go south.”
While Springsteen claims not to be a billionaire, he’s not short of wealth following his deal with Sony in 2021, which was a no-brainer for the musician due to a multitude of reasons. He explained to Howard Stern in 2022: “I just got to a point in my life where, you know, I’m 73-years-old, and it was going to Columbia (Records), who I knew was going to take really good care of it. And so it was just a timing thing and it was like, ‘ok it makes sense’.”
Additionally, Springsteen stated that he never entered the rock ‘n’ roll business for the potential financial incentives, continuing, “I bumped into the luckiest job in the world because they pay you a fortune for something that I would have done for free.”
Bruce Springsteen’s new documentary
On October 25th’s, Springsteen’s new documentary began streaming on Disney+. Road Diary is the latest look into the life of Springsteen and his E-Street Band. It follows the behind-the-scenes preparation for their 2023 and 2024 tour, showing insights into their creative process as well as their personal relationships, including updates on the health of Springsteen’s wife and bandmate, Patti Scialfa.
The reason for making the film iss a slightly morbid one, as Springsteen joked to the BBC, “Well, because I could be dead by the next one.”
‘The Boss’ continued, “I’m 75 years old now. I’ve decided that the waiting-to-do-things part of my life is over.”
His bandmate, Steven Van Zandt, chimed in to agree, stating, “We’re closer to the end than we are to the beginning, but the point of this tour was that we’re not going out quietly, man. We’re going to balance that mortality with vitality.”
