Broken Social Scene announce first new album in nine years with ‘Remember The Humans’

Broken Social Scene have announced that they will be releasing their first new record in nine years with Remember The Humans.

The new record will be released on May 8th and sees the band release an album full of brand new material for the first time since 2017’s Hunger of Thunder.

The album comes about as a result of both loss and reunion between members Kevin Drew and David Newfeld, who reconnected after spending what was almost 20 years apart.

They both started working on new music, but during the recording process, both band members lost their mothers, which in turn brought them even closer together and gave the album a much clearer direction.

Newfeld said: “Our moms would have wanted us to do this, and get it right after 20 years of not working together.”

The band have never fully broken up, as Broken Social Scene act as a rotating collective rather than a strict band that must have the same members; however, this is the first time that Newfeld and Drew, firm fixtures during their prime, have worked together in two decades.

Broken Social Scene member Charles Spearin said that having Newfeld on board helps elevate the songs, as his production style is exactly the kind of thing that the band requires.

Spearin said: “His production suits the chaos of our songwriting so well…he’s got a childlike energy that is really contagious, when you get a piece of music that he loves, Oh my God, he’s bouncing like a little boy.”

The new album, Remember The Humans, will be out on May 8th, with the band’s newest single, ‘Hey Amanda’, available now.
