Brit Awards 2025: Charli XCX scoops main awards for ‘Brat’
After painting the summer of 2024 lime green with her latest album, Brat, Charli XCX has been recognised at the Brit Awards.
Heading into the awards show, which was held at London’s O2 Arena and hosted by Jack Whitehall, Charli was the most-nominated artist. In addition to being shortlisted in the ‘Song of the Year’ category for her Billie Eilish collaboration ‘Guess’, her album, Brat, has been nominated for ‘Album of the Year’. Charli was also up for ‘Artist of the Year’, ‘Pop Act’ and ‘Dance Act’.
While Charli XCX wasn’t successful in every category that she contested, she did win the biggest awards of the ceremony and is now the proud recipient of the ‘Album of the Year’ award as well as the prestigious ‘Artist of the Year’.
In her acceptance speech for ‘Artist of the Year’, Charli said: “I heard that ITV were complaining about my nipples and I feel like we’re in the era of free the nipple. Thanks for being on my side. This is really cool – thank you so much.”
“I feel like I’ve always been an artist,” she continued, “but it really takes a whole team, and they’re all sat at that table, so I just want to say thanks to the people who helped me make this record. Thank you to all the artists who feel like they don’t fit in but are brave enough to try, I share this with you.”
The Brits also recognised Charli XCX’s success within the last 12 months, which has made her the UK’s biggest cultural export and elevated her status in the music industry, with the inaugural ‘Songwriter of the Year’ award.
Prior to tonight, Charli XCX had never previously won a Brit Award in her career despite being a prominent figure for more than a decade.
In a glowing review of Brat, Far Out wrote: “If you’ve been drawn in by the party girl promotion, Brat might not live up to your hopes for a rave record. Instead, Brat is a tale of two Charlis: the sunglassed, ‘so Julia,’ it girl who drags you to the club every weekend, sunglasses and poppers in hand, and the more vulnerable Charli behind-the-scenes, who struggles to marry her image with her low self-esteem and attempts to balance her fame with her personal life.”
