Brian Eno and Devo documentaries to debut at Sundance Film Festival 2024

The Sundance Institute has unveiled the schedule for the upcoming 2024 Sundance Film Festival. Taking place for eleven days between January 18th and 28th, the festival will premiere musical documentaries on Brian Eno, Lollapalooza, Luther Vandross and Devo.

Eno, directed by Gary Hustwit of Helvetica, Objectified, and Urbanized fame, follows the extraordinary career and unique outlook of Brian Eno. Having co-founded Roxy Music in the early 1970s, Eno went on to become an avant-pop innovator, ambient pioneer and master producer.

The film allegedly uses “groundbreaking generative technology,” which gives a different viewing experience upon each viewing.

Meanwhile, a documentary on the zany new wave band Devo, helmed by Chris Smith, will launch alongside a similar biographical study of the late soul singer Luther Vandross. Luther: Never Too Much is directed by Dawn Porter.

The festival also opens its arms to the three-part limited series Lolla: The Story of Lollapalooza. Directed and produced by Michael John Warren, the docuseries will follow the story of the multi-national festival and its path from birth to global success. The first two parts of the series will be screened at Sundance and online.

Alongside such delectable features, another documentary titled As We Speak examines the importance of rap lyrics in modern court cases. Directed by J.M. Harper, the feature studies “the growing weaponization of rap lyrics in the United States criminal justice system and abroad.”

Since releasing his 29th studio album, ForeverAndEverNoMore, in 2022, Brian Eno has busied himself with a collection of live shows worldwide. Most recently, he performed his 2016 album, The Ship, alongside the Baltic Sea Philharmonic.

In a five-star review of Eno’s performance at London’s Royal Festival Hall, Far Out wrote: “During the performance, Eno complained of a cold affecting his vocals, but my friend and I agreed this wasn’t in any way tangible. From where I sat, his oaken, timeless voice struck every note, undulating fluidly with the orchestra’s vivid, rolling waves.”
