Boston announces Ayo Edebiri Day in celebration of hometown star
The city of Boston, Massachusetts, has declared April 10th as Ayo Edebiri Day to celebrate The Bear star.
Edebiri was born and raised in Boston, growing up in the Dorchester area of the city, which remains very close to her heart. It was at the Boston Latin School as a teenager that she first got a taste of performing comedy, which put her on the path to Hollywood.
On April 10th, Edebiri returned home to the Boston Latin School to meet with the Yellow Submarine Improv Troupe, which she was a part of before graduating in 2013. While at the Boston Latin School, the actor also participated in a fireside chat and took questions from students.
Following the event, Mayor Michelle Wu declared April 10th as Aye Edebiri Day, and said, “It was a true delight to speak with award-winning actor, comedian, writer, producer, and Dorchester girl Ayo Edebiri about how BPS and our city helped shape her path.”
The Mayor continued: “We’re so proud of our BPS alums making a difference in the world, and it was an honor to welcome Ayo back home to Boston to inspire the next generation. Thank you to all our BPS educators for pouring into our young people and supporting them to explore their passions.”
Wu concluded: “I’m so grateful to Ayo for spending time with our students at BLS sharing her story and giving advice about the many opportunities and paths they can take to reach their dreams.”
Meanwhile, Edebiri reflected on returning to the Boston Latin School on Instagram. She shared a series of images from her time as a student, and explained how she was “incredibly floored, honored and grateful for today”
Edebiri proudly wrote: “I’m a product of Boston Public Schools and a product of well funded public services. I’m a product of diverse environments that worked to push the boundaries and meanings of inclusion. I’m a product of an environment that cared about kids having access to arts and the humanities if STEM wasn’t their thing.”
The actor also praised Wu for representing the city in a positive light, writing, “Especially proud to be from a city that has a mayor with as much fortitude, grace and care for her constituents and the world at large”.Going forward, every April 10th will be recognised as Ayo Edebiri Day in Boston as the city comes together to celebrate a fine success story and testament to the power of arts education.
