Bon Iver launches “new colour” with Pantone, ‘fABLE Salmon’

Bon Iver, whose real name is Justin Vernon, has officially launched a “new colour” in partnership with Pantone.

His fifth studio album, SABLE fABLE, was released earlier this year and has since received a Grammy nomination for ‘Best Alternative Music Album‘. The cover of the artwork sees the singer-songwriter dressed in a soft shade of orange.

Now, he has officially launched the shade with Pantone. In a statement, the star explained this move, sharing, “I’ve always thought about how, underneath our skin, no matter what the pigment is, it’s this kind of salmon-belly colour when it gets cut open.”

He went on, “I’ve always thought about the humanity of it…SABLE is darkness — and the choice to go into the darkness. It’s solitary. It’s pressing the bruise. It’s self-martyrdom and sadness. fABLE represents a new me, with new flesh for a new healthy, happy person.”

In celebration of his healthier approach to the industry, Pantone has officially launched a new merchandise line featuring the colour. It includes new mugs, notebooks, keyboards and tote bags.

Nodding towards the consumerist nature of music-making, he Vernon’s statement added, “Every band, punk or pop, is in a commercial, capitalist space. Old punk bands were the best brand-builders of all time. Black Flag has the best logo ever. I was like, ‘Let’s lean into that.’”

In the post revealing the merch, Pantone explained, “Justin Vernon sought one shade to hold an entire emotional world. He found it in Pantone 1625 C.”

Far Out gave his latest album, Sable, Fable, three stars, observing, “Not all new releases need to feel tightly pulled together with clear direction, and often, this approach works in Bon Iver’s favour. However, certain parts stand out more than others, resulting in a slightly disjointed whole that is sometimes let down by its own quiet weaknesses.”
