Bob Dylan delivers ‘Nervous Breakdown’ with surprise performance of Eddie Cochran classic
Bob Dylan surprised fans by delivering a ‘Nervous Breakdown’, unexpectedly performing the Eddie Cochran classic live in Nebraska.
The musical icon kicked off the 2026 leg of his Rough and Rowdy Ways tour at the Orpheum Theater in Omaha on March 21st, where it was revealed that the setlist for the show had significantly changed as the show heads into its fifth consecutive year.
One of the most notable new additions was a surprise cover version Dylan gave of the 1958 classic ‘Nervous Breakdown’ from Cochran, which he has never performed live before throughout his storied career.
Early rock and roll figures such as Cochran were not only major influences on the emergence of the genre back during its most formative years, but evidently went on to heavily shape the type of musician Dylan became in later years, as he bridged the gap between folk and rock music.
However, his cover of ‘Nervous Breakdown’ is far from the only rendition of other artists’ iconic hits, as last year during his appearance at the Outlaw Music Festival in Phoenix, he also performed a stunning version of The Pogues’ ‘A Rainy Night in Soho’.
As part of his opening show in Nebraska, Dylan sang another cover in the form of Bo Diddley’s ‘I Can Tell’, while also performing his song ‘The Man in the Black Coat’ for the first time since 2013.
Although the genesis of the singer’s live shows means that he often eschews performing his biggest hits, he unexpectedly reeled out the classic ‘Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right’ from his seminal The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan as an all-round crowd pleaser.
The show in Omaha marked the beginning of another year of Dylan’s extensive touring schedule, where he will be on the road across North America until July, having brought the Rough and Rowdy Ways tour to the UK and Europe last year.
He is next set to perform live in Rochester, Minnesota, on March 24th, before heading to Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana over the course of the remainder of this month.
