Bob Dylan announces new book of sketches, ‘Point Blank (Quick Studies)’

Bob Dylan has announced that a new book of his artwork, Point Blank (Quick Studies), will be available later this year.

The book will be a coffee table-sized offering, consisting of approximately 100 drawings hailing from between 2021 and 2022. Alongside Dylan’s drawings, “prose vignettes” will bring further meaning to light, courtesy of Eddie Gorodetsky, Jackie Hamilton, and Lucy Sante.

Dylan’s current exhibition at London’s Halcyon gallery is called Point Blank. As suggested by the similar titles, the upcoming book will include drawings that served as studies for paintings included in that exhibition, which ends on July 6th.

“This book showcases Bob Dylan’s mastery of telling stories, creating moods and provoking feelings,” Simon & Schuster’s VP, Sean Manning, said of the project.

Manning continued: “The images are deeply evocative, at once innocent and world-weary, joyous and forlorn, humorous and sensual, enigmatic and familiar. Dylan’s ability to find beauty and mystery in the seemingly mundane is one of his great gifts—and the gift he’s continually given to the public over the years, including now with Point Blank.”

The images will all be in black and white. The offering will feature both landscapes and portraits, including images of a Parisian canal, roller skaters, a roll of Scotch tape, and a karaoke singer.

Though Dylan has been a multi-disciplinary artist all his life, the real turning point for his artistic career was in 2019, when he conducted his first solo exhibition at the Modern Art Museum Shanghai. This exhibition, titled Retrospectrum, saw resounding success, with 100,000 visitors in just three months.

Throughout his career, he’s won a Pulitzer and a Nobel Prize for his groundbreaking poetry and song lyrics. He won America’s Presidential Medal of Freedom, the National Medal of Arts, an Oscar, and over ten Grammys.

On November 18th, Point Blank: Quick Studies will be released. Alongside this, Simon & Schuster will release an unabridged audiobook of 2004’s Chronicles: Volume One, written by Dylan and read by Sean Penn.
