Blumhouse acquire ‘Saw’ franchise rights

Blumhouse have now acquired the prospective rights to the Saw franchise, returning the horror offering to its very first director.

After 20 years, producers Oren Koules and Mark Burg are handing the reins over to James Wan and Blumhouse’s Jason Blum. The decision comes after executive producer Jason Constantine died in early June. Blumhouse merged with Atomic Monster back in 2024; Wan directed the original Saw movie in 2004.

Thanks to this move, another key piece in the Saw universe is back on board. Leigh Whannell, who co-created and wrote the original Saw, is also part of the Blumhouse universe. Since then, she has directed The Invisible Man and The Wolf Man, two classic horror offerings.

Lionsgate will continue its 50:50 stake in Saw and will distribute the new films domestically in the US. Blumhouse, Atomic Monster, and Lionsgate will work on the international release strategy for the films together.

Together, all ten Saw films have grossed over $1.1 billion at the global box office, making it the fifth most successful horror franchise ever made. Koules nodded towards this success in an official statement that announced the acquisition.

“With the success of the 10th film, this felt like the right time to pass the baton,” Koules said. “It’s especially meaningful to see the franchise return to its original creators, James and Leigh, and I can’t think of a better partner than Jason to lead ‘Saw’ into its next chapter. On a personal note, I know the late Gregg Hoffman, my original partner on this journey, would be so happy with this ending.”

Burg was just as sentimental in his official statement: “It’s been an amazing ride and, with the recent passing of our beloved executive producer, Jason Constantine, it’s time for me to move on and tell new stories. ‘Saw’ will always be a part of my history and Hollywood history, and I hope Jigsaw and the Saw Universe live on for many more movies and years to come.”

The release date for Saw XI has been moved several times publicly. Now, it appears the project is certainly in the works; it’s not a question of who, but of when.
