Billy Joel wanted to form a supergroup with John Mayer and Sting

Billy Joel has shared a list of the musicians he has previously considered forming a supergroup with, including John Mayer and Sting.

During a new interview with Howard Stern on SiriusXM, Stern told the singer-songwriter that Tom Petty and George Harrison should have asked him to be in The Traveling Wilburys alongside Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne and Roy Oribson. Instead of pondering the question, Joel admitted that he had previously considered putting together his very own supergroup.

“Me, Don Henley and Sting. And maybe John Mayer on guitar,” said Joel when quizzed about who was set to be in his supergroup. According to Joel, who recently released his comeback single ‘Turn The Lights Back On’, it didn’t come to fruition due to other commitments, statitng, “Everybody’s busy.”

Despite being close with Paul McCartney, Joel confessed he had no interest in asking him to be a part of the supergroup, he explained: “He was in the super-est group of all time. I don’t have the nerve to do that.”

When pressed by Stern, Joel also admitted that McCartney’s former bandmate, Ringo Starr, would be an excellent addition to the supergroup, playing the drums. Other names he floated that he would like to work with included Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page.

There is no word on whether or not Joel’s proposed supergroup will ever come to fruition. However, he recently confirmed Sting will be joining him for a select few dates throughout his North American tour this year. The tour will see Joel travel to all major cities across North America, bringing his legendary live show to fans nationwide.
