Billy Joel documentary set to arrive on HBO
The life and career of Billy Joel is the subject of the new HBO documentary Billy Joel: And So It Goes.
The two-part series will premiere this summer and be directed by Susan Lacy and Jessica Lavin. Joel previously teamed up with HBO more than 40 years ago for the singer-songwriter’s iconic special, Live From Long Island.
The logline for Billy Joel: And So It Goes describes it as “an expansive portrait of the life and music of Billy Joel, exploring the love, loss, and personal struggles that fuel his songwriting. With unprecedented access to never-before-seen performances, home movies, and personal photographs, along with extensive, in-depth one-on-one interviews, the documentary intimately explores the life and work of Joel, whose music has endured across generations.”
Meanwhile, Lacey added: “For those who think they know Joel’s story, as well as those who are not as familiar, I believe this two-part film is both a revelation and a surprise.”
The director also explained that before undertaking the project, she had little knowledge of Joel’s career but became absorbed by his story, adding, “I was drawn to his story as someone who knew little at the outset, and was astounded at how autobiographical his songs are and how complex his story is. We are gratified that Bill trusted us with his story, which we have told as honestly as possible, diving into territory which has not been explored before.”
Joel is currently taking time out of performing and was recently forced to rearrange a number of his upcoming concerts due to undergoing surgery.
The ‘Piano Man’, who will return to the stage on July 5th, explained to fans earlier this month: “While I regret postponing any shows, my health must come first. I look forward to getting back on stage and sharing the joy of live music with our amazing fans. Thank you for your understanding.”
