Billy Idol has claimed that he should be inducted into the upcoming class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as “I’m fucking incredible!”
Along with 14 other artists, Idol is currently a candidate for the public vote to be inducted, and canvassed for his place in an interview with The Independent by saying that he should receive the honour due to his personal and musical plaudits.
When asked why fans should cast their vote to him, the singer said: “Because I’m just fucking incredible! It’s pretty amazing that I went from something like punk rock in England to mainstream success in the States. I was not only involved in punk, I became a big part of the ’80s new wave. And then I carried on making the music, living the rock and roll life.”
He added that “I’ve also gone beyond what people expect, with things like cyberpunk,” before enthusing his own merits by saying: “I didn’t stay in my lane. I took chances.”
“Even coming to America, I had no idea I was going to do really well,” Idol continued, “And the risks I took worked. All of that shows an enterprising spirit – a spirit of rock and roll.”
The classic punk rocker is one of 14 artists waiting to find out whether they will be inducted into the prestigious Hall of Fame, which will be unveiled at the end of the month. Other contenders include the likes of Oasis, Soundgarden, Cyndi Lauper, The White Stripes, and Joy Division/New Order.
Idol is also set to release his ninth studio album Dream Into It on April 25th, his first in some 11 years following on from 2014’s Kings & Queens of the Underground.
