The piano genius and all-round beloved musician Chilly Gonzales has been taking part in a Pop Masterclass for 1LIVE Radio where he deconstructs some pop gems. His recent episode saw him take on Billie Eilish song ‘Bad Guy’.
The 19-year-old singer has been the face of pop music since she broke on to the scene with her monster-hit ‘Bad Guy’. Since then she has been lambasted by some of the darker reaches of the rock and roll museum—but Gonzales is here to tell them they’re wrong.
As well as being an expert on piano Gonzales is also a music theory nerd and explained Lil Nas X’s appeal earlier this month. During this feature, he explains the intelligence behind Eilish’s breakout number.
He likens her song to another stadium-filling track, The Rolling Stones’ ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction’. He argues the syncopation is mirrored in the songs main riffs and is full of praise for Eilish’s work.
He also proclaims the singer to be the first artist to turn the ever-trending ASMR videos into music and suggests her vocal patterns are heavily influenced by them.
The clip brings a whole new light on exactly why ‘Bad Guy’ took over the globe. See it, below.
