Bill Murray reveals who he wants to play him in upcoming ‘Saturday Night Live’ movie
Comedic actor Bill Murray has shared names of four actors who he would like to see portray him in the upcoming Saturday Night Live biopic, SNL 1975.
Last year, it was revealed director Jason Reitman had been lined up by Sony Pictures to create a new movie depicting the inaugural episode of the hit comedy programme which aired in 1975. The show, devised by Lorne Michaels, is currently in its 49th season on NBC.
While Murray was not part of the initial cast for Saturday Night Live, instead joining in 1977, the comedy talent played a pivotal role in shaping its impeccable legacy as an institution of entertainment in the United States.
In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, Murray revealed he’s been in contact with Reitman to help him gauge an insight into the chaotic early days of Saturday Night Live.
The Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire star revealed: “He’s been picking my brain about the SNL days since he was a grasshopper, so he knows a lot of what I know. He’s an astute student and director. I’m blessed that this movie will really be about the original seven [SNL cast members]. I get to be on the sidelines. I think my name gets mentioned, which is good.”
After Murray revealed he plays a part in the movie, even though it’s only a small role, he was then asked who he hopes will portray him. The actor said in response: “I like Kenan Thompson; he could play me. Or Bill Hader. Those two… or Kristen Wiig… any of those three could play me. Or Amy Poehler.”
It was previously confirmed that SNL 1975 will star Dylan O’Brien as Dan Aykroyd, Nicholas Braun as Jim Henson and Finn Wolfhard as an intern at NBC. Meanwhile, Gabrielle LaBelle is set to play the show’s creator, Michaels.
Reitman’s latest project is Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, starring Murray, which is set to arrive in cinemas on March 22nd, 2024. The film also features aforementioned Saturday Night Live alumni, Aykroyd, who is reprising the role of Ray Stantz.
Meanwhile, Saturday Night Live recently announced Kristen Wiig, who rose to prominence with her seven-season stint on the show from 2005 to 2012, will be hosting the programme on April 6th. Multiple Brit Award winner Raye will also be performing, making her SNL debut in the process.
Additionally, Ryan Gosling will be returning to hosting duties on April 12th, having previously helmed editions of the show in 2015 and 2017. Chris Stapleton will serve as the episode’s musical guest.
