Watch Bill Murray return to ‘Groundhog Day’ in new Super Bowl advert

Bill Murray has reprised Phil Connors, his now-iconic lead role of the 1993 cult film Groundhog Dog, and stars in a 2020 Super Bowl commercial for Jeep.

The film, originally directed by Harold Ramis, tells the story of a cynical television weatherman who finds himself reliving the same day over and over again when he goes on location to the small town of Punxsutawney to film a report about their annual Groundhog Day.

Murray’s performance, which is now revered as one of his best, was typically witty and inventive as Groundhog Dog cements itself as one of the best comedies of all time. Despite a lukewarm response upon initial release, the film has grown in stature as the years have gone by and, in 2006, it was added to the National Film Registry after it was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

Now in a surprise move, Murray is back and he’s stuck in the same old loop in Punxsutawney alongside his former co-star, Stephen Tobolowsky, who plays the role of Ned Ryerson.
