Bill Murray, Benicio Del Toro and Michael Cera cast in Wes Anderson’s next movie

After a hefty year of filmmaking, Wes Anderson has chosen his cast for his forthcoming feature film, with Bill Murray, Michael Cera and Benicio Del Toro being the first to join the crew.

The new movie, which is being kept tightly under wraps, has been co-written by him and Roman Coppola and will be Anderson’s 12th feature film. Finished shortly before the writer’s strike, the script has been pondered for quite some time, with Del Toro eyed for the leading role, while Cera and long-time Anderson collaborator Murray will fill major supporting parts.

It’s certainly no surprise to see Murray in the cast list, with the actor having starred in nine of the director’s previous movies, most notably The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, which Anderson and Noah Baumbach penned.

Meanwhile, Cera enjoyed a fruitful 2023, appearing in the box-office sensation Barbie as the fan-favourite character Alan, before making a surprise appearance in Kristoffer Borgli’s Dream Scenario. The Oscar-winning star Del Toro wasn’t so active, however, only appearing in one movie, the Netflix crime drama Reptile, alongside Justin Timberlake and Alicia Silverstone.

Anderson approaches his 12th feature film after a year of extraordinary activity, releasing his movie Asteroid City in the summer before partnering with Netflix to drop four short films based on the stories of Roald Dahl. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar was the most successful of the bunch, alongside Poison, while The Swan and The Rat Catcher weren’t so successful with critics.

In our review of Asteroid City, we wrote: “Asteroid City feels expansive in its sprawling ensemble cast, narrative structure and philosophical themes, but it’s all wrapped up neatly and tidily within two hours, a proud demonstration of the economy of cinema. Ultimately, the film is a heartfelt, engaging and surprisingly compelling success story that heralds a return to form from an auteur director who has gained a new sense of modesty and humility”.
