Big Thief’s Adrianne Lenker releases new songs to benefit Palestine Children’s Relief Fund

Adrianne Lenker of Big Thief has shared six brand new songs in a collection called I Won’t Let Go of Your Hand. The demos are available on Bandcamp, with all the money made going towards the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund.

Lenker wrote in a note accompanying the release, “The need for a ceasefire is beyond urgent. Permanent Ceasefire Now!”

Big Thief found themselves at the centre of controversy in 2022 when they booked two gigs in Israel and defended their decision to do so. Tel Aviv is the hometown of the band’s bassist, Max Oleartchik; however, the band later cancelled the shows, saying, “Our intent… stemmed from a simple belief that music can heal.”

In a recent interview Lenker did with The New York Times, she said their original decision to book the gigs was “Naïve and not thought out.” She went on to say that the criticism triggered an inner turmoil, and the discussion that followed could have broken up the band.

“Everything I think to say feels like it is less than a micro-fraction of the power that is needed to convey the message,” said Lenker when discussing I Won’t Let Go of Your Hand. “I can’t express how sad and angry I am about this ongoing violence towards Palestinians. The killing must stop.”

She continued, “Today I’m releasing a new collection of songs I cherish, which were recorded in the moments they were written. You can purchase this record on Bandcamp, and 100% of the proceeds will go towards the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund.”

Next week, Lenker will release her brand new solo album, Bright Future. The LP was co-produced with Philip Weinrobe and features several musicians, including Mat Davidson, Josefin Runsteen and Nick Hakim.
