Beyoncé donates $2.5 million to fight Los Angeles wildfires

Pop superstar Beyoncé has donated $2.5 million to help rebuild Los Angeles following the devastating wildfires that broke out across the Californian region last week.

At this stage, the wildfires that began on January 7th have yet to be fully contained and are continuing to wreak havoc in Los Angeles. According to the County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner, 24 people have died as a result of the wildfires, and more than 12,000 structures have been destroyed in a 40,000-acre vicinity.

Several high-profile figures from the entertainment industry have lost their homes due to the fires, including Mel Gibson, Mandy Moore, Anthony Hopkins, Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Paris Hilton, and Adam Brody.

Now, through her BeyGOOD charitable foundation, Beyoncé has donated $2.5 million to the newly formed LA Fire Relief Fund.

On Instagram, the foundation shared: “The fund is earmarked to aid families in the Altadena/Pasadena area who lost their homes, and to churches and community centers to address the immediate needs of those affected by the wildfires.”

Beyoncé founded the charity in 2013 which she has used as a vessel to “provide resources worldwide” and help marginalised communities as well as supporting areas urgently needing relief.

The singer’s intervention comes after Jamie Lee Curtis, whose home is in the Pacific Palisades region, pledged to donate $1 million to tackle the wildfire crisis in Los Angeles on January 9th.

The Academy Award-winner said of her donation:  “As the fire still rages on and California Fire Los Angeles Fire Department and all the available first responders and agencies involved in fighting fire and saving lives are still hard at work and neighbors and friends are banding together to save each other, my husband and I and our children have pledged $1 million from our Family Foundation to start a fund of support for our great city and state and the great people who live and love there.”
