The 93rd Academy Awards is nearly with us, and with the impending glitz of Hollywood approaching us at an ever-increasing speed, the full list of nominations have now arrived. One of the most hotly-contested categories is the award for ‘Best Original Score’.
Naturally, it’s an award that has always grabbed our attention. First awarded in 1935, the gong for ‘Best Original Score’ is always likely to avoid the headlines. After all, most of those attached to creating a good score are creators intent on seamlessly supplementing the visual experience with a sonic counterpoint, meaning they’re not often the people to be making a big splash at events. However, this year may be a little bit different.
That’s because of the huge names attached to this year’s competition for the prize. Not only is Spike Lee’s latest classic Da 5 Bloods included for consideration, but its Netflix contemporary from David Fincher, Mank, which is up for ten awards in total. There’s also a convincing nod to the brand new feature film from Pixar, Soul.
A strong category usually means there are no real favourites, but the new Pixar production surely holds all the cards on this occasion. Not only can the film boast Nine Inch Nails bandmates Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross as the men behind the music, but the production also recently picked up the Golden Globe for ‘Best Original Score’ just a few weeks ago.
Outside of the favourites for the award, Minari, the Lee Isaac Chung film set in Korea looks to be a future cult-classic and News of the World, a gritty Western, also provides moments of brilliance.
The 92nd Academy Awards saw the prize for ‘Best Original Score’ go to Hildur Guðnadóttir for their work on Todd Phillips’ classic Joker.
The 93rd Academy Awards show will take place on April 25th.
