Berlin 2025: Competition line-up revealed for film festival
Ahead of the Berlin Film Festival next month, movies including Richard Linklater’s Blue Moon and Michel Franco’s Dreams have been confirmed to be in competition at the German event.
The 75th Berlin Film Festival will take place between February 13th and February 23rd, 2025. Previously, it was revealed that Tom Tykwer’s upcoming movie The Light, part of the Berlinale Special Gala, is scheduled to open the festival.
Madeleine Sims-Fewer’s new film, Honey Bunch, is among the major productions in competition at Berlin. Significantly, Romanian director Radu Jude, who won the ‘Golden Bear’ in 2021 for Bad Luck Banging Or Loony Porn, is returning to Berlin with his new movie, Kontinental ’25.
British director Rebecca Lenkiewicz is the only filmmaker in competition at the upcoming edition of the festival to be in competition with a debut feature. Her movie, Hot Milk, stars Emma Mackey, Vicky Krieps and Vincent Perez.
Other significant films set to be shown in Berlin include James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown and Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17, both part of the Berlinale Special Gala.
American director Todd Haynes is set to be Jury President at this year’s Berlin Film Festival. Meanwhile, last month, it was revealed Tilda Swinton would receive an honorary ‘Golden Bear’ at the 2025 edition of the annual event next month.
In reaction to the news, Swinton said, “The Berlinale is the first film festival I ever went to, in 1986 with Derek Jarman and the first film I made, his Caravaggio. It was my portal into the world in which I have made my life’s work – the world of international filmmaking – and I have never forgotten the debt I owe it.”
She continued: “To be honoured in this way by this particular festival is deeply touching for me: it will be my privilege and pleasure to celebrate, once more next February, the seedbed that is this wide-eyed and reliably wonderful gathering.”
