Ben Stiller names ‘Step Brothers’ scene that convinced him to cast Adam Scott in ‘Severance’

Severance director and executive producer Ben Stiller has highlighted a scene from the classic comedy movie, Step Brothers, which led to him casting Adam Scott to star in the science-fiction series.

On February 18th, an account on X named Shooter McGavin posted an iconic scene from Step Brothers, in homage to the Happy Gilmore character. The film notably starred Will Ferrell and John C Reilly as dysfunctional middle-aged step-siblings who grow from mortal enemies to best friends.

In this scene, Scott, who plays Ferrell’s character’s brother, Derek Huff, is holding court at a family dinner and entertaining those sitting around the table with an anecdote about a fishing trip with Mark Cuban among other famous faces.

However, as Derek’s story enters full flow, he’s interrupted by Reilly’s character, Dale Doback, who asks him about the size of the fish which catches the table off-guard. In response, Derek initially gives a bemused answer before hilariously adding, “Listen gang, don’t be mad at Dale for ruining the story and possibly the evening. It’s totally fine, I have a lot more stories.”

The viral clip of this scene caught the attention of Stiller, who shared it on his X account along with the caption, “One of the funniest scenes in all of movies ever made in history of movies being made.”

In response, an X user asked, “Be honest Ben, how much did Adam’s performance in this scene influence you casting him in Severance?” Stiller then replied, “Completely. It’s when I knew he was an incredible actor.”

The long-awaited second season of Severance began streaming on Apple TV+ on January 17th and is currently being released on a weekly basis until the finale airs on March 21st.
