‘Beetlejuice: The Musical’ to open in London’s West End
Beetlejuice will now enjoy yet another lease on life, as Beetlejuice: The Musical will make its long-anticipated West End debut next year.
In the 1988 original movie, Barbara and Adam Maitland perish in a car accident and, as a result, find themselves stuck haunting their country residence. Teen Lydia, originally played by Winona Ryder, moves into the abode with the unbearable Deetzes, and attempts to scare them away. In doing so, she attracts the terrifying, yet hilariously clumsy character of Beetlejuice, who brings danger to the town.
Tim Burton’s epic story enjoyed a second installment in 2024, as Beetlejuice Beetlejuice invited mischief-makers Michael Keaton, Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara back onto the big screen and plunged the story into the 21st century.
Now, the stage adaptation is coming to London. James Lane, Producer of Crossroads Live, said of the announcement: “We are beyond thrilled to be working alongside Warner Bros. and the ingenious team behind Beetlejuice to bring this highly anticipated Broadway hit to London’s West End at last. There is nothing else quite like this show, and audiences really are in for a terrifyingly hilarious treat at the spectacular Prince Edward Theatre next year.”
The music and lyrics for the theatrical run have been written by Eddie Perfect. Two-time Tony Award winner Alex Timbers, who previously worked on Moulin Rouge! The Musical and Here Lies Love) will direct.
Beetlejuice: The Musical has previously opened on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theatre in 2019 and enjoyed further success at the Marquis Theatre in 2022. The first national US tour also recently concluded an 88-city tour with a final Broadway run planned at the Palace Theatre from October 8th.
In a four-star review of the original movie, Far Out wrote, “An expression of individualism that would capture the imaginations of thousands of like-minded fans from across the world, Beetlejuice is an iconic example of just how barmy and liberating Hollywood studios were willing to be in the 1980s.”
Casting for the West End debut is yet to be confirmed.
