The full trailer for the Led Zeppelin documentary Becoming Led Zeppelin has been released ahead of its IMAX release next month.
The documentary was first announced in 2019 and will mark the first time a film about the legendary band reaches the big screen. It initially premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2021 and after a considerable wait, will be soon available to the general public.
Directed by Bernard MacMahon, Becoming Led Zeppelin will arrive in a special cinema cut with interviews with Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones, as well as historic clips of John Bonham and concert footage of the band in 1969 at Fillmore West, the Atlanta Pop Festival and the Texas Pop Festival.
The film spans the band’s early years and their rise to fame with specific reflections on their formation in 1968 and heading to America for their North American tour in 1969. The film earned full support from the surviving band members upon its initial announcement, with Page saying he felt no one was more “qualified” than MacMahon to tell their story.
Page has famously been reluctant to support or approve other Led Zeppelin documentaries in the past but noted that he found it easy to get behind MacMahon’s project because it provides a necessary balance between the music and their story.
“Everything about the music and what would make the music tick,” he said during a press conference at the Venice Film Festival. “And it’s complete versions of songs, not just a little sample and then talking heads. This is something in a totally different genre,” he added.
The project could have arrived on screens much earlier, but the team spent a lot of time travelling to find as much rare or unseen archive footage as possible to ensure it was worth watching for the fans.
As producer Allison McGourty explained, “We spent five years flying back and forth across the Atlantic scouring attics and basements in pursuit of rare and unseen film footage, photographs and music recordings.”
Adding: “Then we transferred each piece of media with custom techniques so that in IMAX, these 55-year-old clips and music would look and sound like they came out of the lab yesterday.”
Becoming Led Zeppelin will be released in over 200 IMAX theatres on February 7th, 2025. Before its general release, it will also premiere in 18 cities on February 5th, 2025, for advanced screenings in select locations.
