Beastie Boys icon Mike D announces debut album, ‘Thank You’

The Beastie Boys‘ Mike D has confirmed details of his debut solo album, titled Thank You.

Mike D has been teasing the announcement in recent weeks after releasing the single, ‘Switch D’, last month, which was then followed up by his first-ever European dates.

In the past week, he’s been previewing material from Thank You in the UK with shows in North Shields and London, with more dates to follow across the continent, including this weekend at Primavera Sound Porto, throughout June.

Now, he’s shared the second taste of the new record in the form of ‘True Colors’ and confirmed that his first full-length album in 15 years will arrive on August 28th.

In a statement, Mike said of the forthcoming release, “It’s been so much fun making this music with people I love and I have grown to really appreciate in our collaboration.”

He then added of his hopes for the record, “And I just hope it’s fun for others and not overly serious, because let’s be real, I’m releasing this music into a very strange and dark and power-fixated world that really devalues art and feelings and compassion and empathy and equality.”

The genesis of the record began at sessions at Mike D’s studio along with his sons Skyler and Davis, which are described in the press release as “a series of zero-pressure, experimental recording sessions”.

Over the course of the record, which was made in a variety of locations, Mike D teamed up with Carter Lang, Jared Solomon, Ging, Jason Lader, Eddie Ruscha, and Tyran Donaldson on Thank You.

He also tapped up Can Can Press, Thad Higa and Charles Deroyan as visual collaborators.
