Beach Bunny recently appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to perform ‘Cloud 9’, the closing track to their wonderful 2020 album Honeymoon.
The last time we talked about Beach Bunny, we were also talking about ‘Cloud 9’. Specifically, we were talking about the Tegan and Sara team up that produced a slightly remixed version of the song. No Quin twins for this performance though, just the band bouncing through the jubilant bubblegum pop of the track.
Surrounded by clouds and shrouded in blueish/pinkish lights, singer Lili Trifilio and her merry band, guitarist Matt Henkels, bassist Anthony Vaccaro and drummer Jon Alvarado, stomp through the tune with a near-identical performance from the one they give on Honeymoon. That’s not a complaint, but rather an admiring thumbs up for the lack of any studio wizardry to cover up their sound. What you see is what you get, and what you get is a cool ass rock band.
As is often the case with bands of this particular makeup, the guys in the back rarely seem to get any praise or even a momentary mention. That’s a shame, because Beach Bunny really sounds like a band, in that all the members play off each other in a tightly wound unit that makes each one feel indispensable. It would probably be easy to call Beach Bunny Trifilio’s band, especially since it started out as a solo project, but I wasn’t expecting the cohesion of professional musicians to mix with a ragged edge that gives them a unique sound the way a bunch of hired guns just can’t replicate. It’s the sound of everyone being in a garage together, playing to the best of their abilities but still retaining a bit of that jagged chemistry. Maybe I’m crazy, but that’s what I hear in this performance.
