Barry Manilow says he’s “one of the lucky ones” after becoming cancer-free
Barry Manilow has announced that he is now cancer-free, saying he is “one of the lucky ones” after the health scare.
The singer previously revealed that he had been diagnosed with stage one lung cancer at the end of last year, leading to him cancelling a series of shows recently, as well as postponing his planned Las Vegas residency.
Despite this, Manilow has now revealed in a new interview with People that he has gone into remission from the early stages of the disease after undergoing a lobectomy surgery as treatment.
Although he has successfully been able to recover, the classic American crooner admitted, “I thought I might be dying” after he unexpectedly received the diagnosis, having initially had a scan for hip pain.
Manilow subsequently had surgery to remove the cancerous area of his lung and spent time in intensive care, of which he said: “I don’t remember it, thank goodness, because it was a nightmare.”
Despite everything he has been through in the past number of months, the 82-year-old acknowledged that he is “one of the lucky ones” in terms of cancer diagnoses and treatments, as, “I don’t have to have chemo, radiation and all that stuff.”
Having come through the other side of his health struggles, Manilow is now looking forward to releasing his 33rd studio album, What a Time, on June 5th.
He previously celebrated his latest single, ‘Once Before I Go’, becoming a top ten single at the start of this month. This subsequently secured Manilow a place in the history books, being the only artist to have a top ten track in the Adult Contemporary Chart in every one of the last six decades.
Acknowledging the milestone, the singer had posted a video on social media for his fans, in which he said: “I also want to say thank you [to] all of you for your messages of support in these last couple of months. It’s been a long ride, and since I have no patience, it’s been agony, but I am getting stronger, and I have great doctors and wonderful friends and family, but I am so looking forward to getting back on stage.”
