Barack Obama reveals his favourite movies of 2023

The former President of the United States, Barack Obama, has released a list of his favourite movies of 2023, as per his long-running tradition.

Taking to X, the 44th President of the United States wrote: “Earlier this year, writers and actors went on strike to advocate for better working conditions and protections. It led to important changes that will transform the industry for the better. Here are some films that reflect their hard work over the last year”.

Obama then went on to preface that some of his “favourite movies” included three that had been produced by Higher Ground, a production company founded by the former President and his wife, Michelle Obama, back in 2018. “I’m biased since these movies were produced by Higher Grounds,” he wrote in the post, “But these are in fact three of the best films I saw this year”.

The movies made through his own production house included George C. Wolfe’s Rustin, Sam Esmail’s Leave the World Behind and the documentary American Symphony by Matthew Heineman.

Elsewhere, Obama named ten of his favourite movies of the year, including such popular releases as Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, Ben Affleck’s Air and Alexander Payne’s Holdovers. Also on the list are a number of more surprising choices, such as the British fantasy thriller Polite Society as well as Monster from the celebrated Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Koreeda.

Filling in the gaps are such films as the Palme d’Or winner and ‘Best Picture’ hopeful Anatomy of a Fall from Justine Triet, as well as Blackberry, American Fiction, Past Lives and A Thousand and One. Several of his choices on the list will likely succeed at the 2024 Academy Awards, including Past Lives, American Fiction and Oppenheimer.
