Bandcamp bans AI music: “Strictly prohibited”
Bandcamp has become one of the first streaming platforms to fully ban AI from its website.
In a new blog post titled ‘Keep Bandcamp Human’, the platform revealed its new position at a time when AI music is seeping into all parts of the industry.
The statement began, “Bandcamp’s mission is to help spread the healing power of music by building a community where artists thrive through the direct support of their fans. We believe that the human connection found through music is a vital part of our society and culture, and that music is much more than a product to be consumed. It’s the result of a human cultural dialog stretching back before the written word.”
The post, then, acts as an example of “fortifying our mission by articulating our policy on generative AI, so that musicians can keep making music, and so that fans have confidence that the music they find on Bandcamp was created by humans.”
As such, the platform shared two key rules. First, Bandcamp outlined, “Music and audio that is generated wholly or in substantial part by AI is not permitted on Bandcamp.”
Secondly, it continued, “Any use of AI tools to impersonate other artists or styles is strictly prohibited in accordance with our existing policies prohibiting impersonation and intellectual property infringement.”
Bandcamp users are encouraged to use the existing reporting tools to flag content for review, which they believe may be AI-generated. Ending on a hopeful note, the statement concludes, “Given the response around this to our previous posts, we hope this news is welcomed. We wish you all an amazing 2026.”
The use of AI in the creative world has been dividing organisations and musicians alike. In 2025, artists like Damon Albarn and Kate Bush came together on a silent album to protest the governmental plans around AI.
In comparison, musicians like Geezer Butler and Imogen Heap have embraced AI as a tool to prop up their own creative ambitions.
